ANCIENT LOTHIANS AND KING LOTH WHO GAVE LOTHIANS ITS NAME FROM NORTHUMBERLAND TO STIRLING THE MIGHTY LOTH DID RULE AND IN THESE ANCIENT TIMES LOTHIANS WOULD BE SO IMPORTANT TO SCOTTISH HISTORY AS ALL TOOK PLACE IN THE ANCIENT LOTHIANS AND STILL LIVES  ON TODAY SO HE LEFT A LEGACY AND HIS NAME.

THE FOLK WHO WALKED OUR LAND

FIVE THOUSAND YEARS AGO; CLIMATIC CONDITIONS HAVING SETTLED DOWN AND THE LAST ICE AGE HAD PASSED THE AREA OF BARBAUCHLAW WOULD HAVE BEEN DENSE FORESTS OF CALEDONIAN PINE TREES AND VARIED WOODS INCLUDING THICKETS, PEATBOGS, SWAMPS AND MOSSES IDEAL FOR THE WILD BOAR, OX, MOOSE, LYNX AND BEARS ALSO THE ROAMING WOLVES TO NAME A FEW.

 WILD FOWL AND EAGLES WAS ABUNDANT FOOD SOURCE FOR THE CELTS WHO FORMED TRIBES WOULD HUNT  AND LIVE IN THIS AREA AND LEAVE MANY CLUES TO THEM BEING HERE AND MYSTERYS TO SOLVE AS WE TRAIL THERE PATH TO MAKE THEM NOT A FOGOTTON PEOPLE BUT A LIVING SOURCE, TO WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE LIVED AND THE CLUES THEY LEFT BEHIND...

 

CAIRNPAPPLE FIVE THOUSANDS YEARS OLD

JUST A FEW MILES AWAY IS AN ANCIENT BURIAL GROUND OUR ANCESTORS USED FOR  THERE RELIGIOUS CUSTOMS AND BURIALS, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT     AND OLDEST IN EUROPE, THE CENTRAL KEY SEEN FROM ANY POSITION IN WEST LOTHIAN. THE TRIBES WOULD HAVE LIVED AND HUNTED BELOW THIS SITE AND COME TOGETHER FOR SPECIAL TIMES OF THE YEAR FROM THE VALLEYS BELOW TO WORSHIP.

BARBAUCHLAW ANCIENT RELIGOUS AREA

TO GIVE THE ABOVE ITS TRUE PLACE IN HISTORY WE MUST BREAK THE NAME DOWN TO -

 BARBAUCHLAW BACHALL BARBAUCHLAW BUCHAL MOR BAR IS GAELIC FOR TOP LAW   IS SCOTS FOR HILL, THE MIDDLE ELEMENT IE BAUCH=BACHUL=BACHULMOR  THE BACHUL MOR WAS THE CROSIER OF ST MOLAUGH GREAT STAFF=THE TRUE LAND. THE TOP OF ST MOLAUGH HILL THE LAND BEING DEDICATED TO THE SAINT BY HOLYROOD ABBEY AND NEWBATTLE. ST MOLAUGH WAS BORN IN IRELAND, HIS LIFE SPAN WAS(530-592)AD. HE THE FIRST MONK, THEN ABBOT.

 AFTER HE DIED HE WAS ELEVATED TO SAINTHOOD. HIS STAFF STILL SURVIVES IN THE MUSEUM AND HIS NAME IN BARBAUCHLAW. THE SITE OF THE MONASTIC SETTLEMENT OF MONKS WAS AT THE PRESENT SITE OF BARBAUCHLAW MILL AND GLEN THE SITE WAS PROTECTED BY AN ANCIENT HILL FORT THEN CASTLE ADJACENT TO THE MILL OGILFACE...WHICH MEANS... HIGH PLACE         

THE BARONY OF OGILFACE

THE ANCIENT LANDS OF OGILFACE PRE 1120 BECAME VERY IMPORTANT IN OUR RESEARCH.

 IT WAS A BARONY WITH A CASTLE FARM. THE MILL AND THE REMAINS ARE STILL THERE TODAY. THIS WAS THE SEAT OF THE DE BOSCO ,1120-1300 THE CASTLE FIRST OF TIMBER THEN STONE. SMALL L PLAN TOWER BUILT UPON A PREHISTORIC SITE WHICH WAS ALWAYS THE NORM IN BUILDING PRACTICE. THE STONE WOULD HAVE BEEN USED TO BUILD WOODEND FARM.. IE. SO AGAIN SITES BECOMES OTHER SITES AND THERE WAS NO WASTE.

PLACE NAMES....

OGILFACE,UCHEL MAES, UGGLELFAS...IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NAMES COMING FROM WELSH/BRITONIC MEANING.  (HIGH DWELLING PLACE).

THE AREA IS 700 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL. OGILFACE MAY BE THE ORIGINAL NAME OF THE IRON AGE SETTLEMENT, UPON WHICH OGILFACE CASTLE WAS BUILT IN THE 12TH CENTURY. (HIGH DWELLING PLACE OF THE IRON AGE) THE ABOVE NAME COULD BE THE ORIGINAL IRON AGE SETTLEMENT THE CASTLE WAS BUILT UPON??THIS IS BEING LOOKED INTO FURTHER UPDATES WILL FOLLOW ON ANY SITES MENTIONED AND ANY HISTOTRCAIL EVEDENCE FOUND THAT RELATE TO SAME

       

THE KNIGHTS OF ST. JOHN TORPHICHEN

THEY HAD THE POWER FOR THIS AREA FROM 1124 LAND WAS ALWAYS CHANGING HANDS AS IT STILL DOES TODAY FROM HOLYROOD TO NEWBATTLE THEN ST.JOHNS THESE ARE JUST CLUES FOR YOU TO FOLLOW AND RESEACH ARMADALE DID NOT EXIST HERE ARE A FEW KNIGHTS WHO WHERE LORD JOHN OF TORPHICHEN COMMANDERS SUCH AS MELDRUM---LIVINGSTON----SCOUGALL----KNOLLIS--DUNDAS----STEWART-DE WELLS---LINDSAY-----SANDILANDS--SINCLAIR (15c----16c)KNIGHTS LORDS BARONS AND KINGS-HUNTED IN THE GLENS AND WOODS AS OUR ANCESTORS DID BEFORE IT IS RECORDED----WILLIAM WALLACE USED THIS AS HIS HEADQUARTERS FOR THE BATTLES OF STIRLING-- AND FALKIRK.THE KNIGHTS AND ALL HAVE GONE BUT THE PRECPTORY IS STILL THERE---CHURCH AND GRAVE YARD FOR YOU TO VISIT. CASTLE AND PROTECTION IN WEST LOTHIAN

ON THE FIRTH OF FORTH SHORE LINE WE HAVE BLACKNESS, MIDHOPE, ABERCORN, HOPECASTLE, THEN THE BINS, DUNTARVIE, NIDDRY, BATHGATE, KIPPS THEN OVER TO STEINS, LINLITHGOW, TORPHICHEN, COUSTON, BRIDGECASTLE, PREHISTORIC HILL FORTS CAIRNPAPPLE IN THE CENTER SOME  STILL THERE SOME JUST RUIN IF YOU DRAW THIS ON PAPER IT GIVES A RING OF CASTLES POWER AND DEFENCE FOR WEST LOTHIAN IN A SMALL AREA EACH ONE IS ONLY 15MINS FROM THE NEXT WAS THIS THE FRONT TO DEFEND STIRLING OR LINLITHGOW PALACE. THESE HILLS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN USE IN ALL HISTORY PERIODS. EARLY WARNING WAS A KEY TO SURVIVIAL AND HAS HELPED KEEP OUR CASTLES TODAY.

LOTHIAN IN FACT BASICILY MEANS KING LOTHS LAND AND WAS VAST AT ONE TIME
